I was reading a wonderful book lent to me by my friend and mentor Stan, called Gruppe on Color. This is a somewhat rare book as it is out of print, but has an amazing insight into color palette, technique and approach in a very no nonsense down to earth writing style.
Gruppe used a palette of Cadmium Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Cadmium Orange, Rose Madder, Cadmium Red Deep, Pthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue and Zinc White.
Emile Gruppe’s paintings are amazingly clear of muddy tones, and he paints in a variety of styles from tonal to very bright.
I have nearly completed one painting using this palette and find it to be fairly simple to use and the results are surprisingly vibrant. This is of a boy on a bike sipping a cool beverage in the summer called “Life’s Little Pleasures.”
